PGY-4 Neurology resident

Yuan Fan, M.D., Ph.D., obtained his medical degree from Guangzhou Medical University followed by 2-year post-graduate training at Jinan University Medical College (Guangzhou) in China.  He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Anatomy and Neurobiology from Indiana University under the guidance of Dr. Zao C. Xu, and a Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience from Baylor College of Medicine under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Johnston.  His training background has been primarily in electroneurophysiology, including in vivo intracellular recording, extracellular recording, in vitro patch-clamp recording on neuronal soma and dendrites using brain slice preparation.  His research interest has been activity-dependent synaptic plasticity (LTP, LTD), excitotoxic neuronal death, dendritic channelopathy, and their implication in neurological conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, and dementia.  Dr. Fan has been a recipient of pre-doctoral fellowship and post-doctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association.  During his clinical neurology residency, he received a NIH R25 training grant for physician-scientists, which enables him to conduct research on mechanisms of spreading depression at the Cerebrovascular Disease and Aging Laboratories under the guidance of Dr. Richard Kraig.  After completing his neurology residency at the University of Chicago, Dr. Fan will continue clinical epilepsy fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
